In China Tiny village becomes hub thanks at the E-Commerce

Posted by Qiao LAB in Taobao , Innovation , E-commerce , China

Taobao changed residents' lives to a focus on online business and getting rich. Xu Junqian found out how they run stores in Qingyanliu, Zhejiang province.

It is a few minutes to 4:00 pm at Qingyanliu, a small village tucked away in Yiwu, Zhejiang province, and it is so quiet you can almost hear a pin drop. Few people can be seen walking around. Rooms on the first floor of every building are tightly shuttered. The entire village is so quiet and empty, it appears to have been evacuated. The one innocuous sight is the number of luxury cars parked in the streets.

However, behind the iron gates of almost every residence in the village, narrow staircases lead to a totally different world consisting of thousands of 300 square meter underground warehouses.

This is "Taobao village", as it has become known, and it is famous for its billion yuan annual sales volume on taobao.com, China's largest online shopping bazaar.

Shanghai Summit Forum: Sustainable development in focus

Qiao LAB

GOVERNMENT heads, business leaders and scholars from around the world will gather in Shanghai today to discuss urban innovation and sustainable development at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Summit Forum.

Care for the environment, investment in green energy, prudent financial regulations and better academic research and development are among the keys to creating a sustainable city, forum participants said yesterday.

"Science is ready for green energy but there's still very little investment in the sector when compared with the output of the energy industry," said Carlo Rubbia, scientific director of the Germany-based Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies and also a Nobel Laureate in Physics. "It's not only a scientific issue, but political, economic and financial as well."

More investment should be directed into research and development of green energy to achieve sustainable growth, he said.

Tu Weiming, a Peking University professor, said the idea of sustainable development is not new. Tu said ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius always stressed a harmonious balance between people and nature, but the concept hasn't been fully implemented yet.

Across Eastern Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan and the Gobi Desert - it certainly was a long way to go without getting lost.

Four driverless electric vans successfully ended an 8,000-mile (13,000-kilometer) test drive from Italy to China - a modern-day version of Marco Polo's journey around the world - with their arrival at the Shanghai Expo on Thursday.

The vehicles, equipped with four solar-powered laser scanners and seven video cameras that work together to detect and avoid obstacles, are part of an experiment aimed at improving road safety and advancing automotive technology.

Tianhe-1 Supercomputer China

CHINA'S Tianhe-1 has taken top spot as the world's fastest computer, according to an industry announcement yesterday.

Housed at the National Center for Supercomputing in the northern port city of Tianjin, Tianhe-1, meaning Milky Way, has a sustained computing speed of 2,507 trillion calculations a second, or 2.507 petaflops per second (PFlop/s). A petaflop is the equivalent of 1,000 trillion calculations.

The system has a theoretical speed of 4.7 PFlop/s, according to a member of the research and development team for Tianhe-1.

Another Chinese system, Nebulae, housed in Shenzhen, is capable of a sustained computing speed of 1.271 PFlop/s on the Linpack benchmark, a measure for ranking supercomputers.

The US leads the world in supercomputing and is home to more than half of the top 500 supercomputers. Its fastest computer, the Jaguar system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, has a speed of 1.75 PFlop/s.

The Tianhe-1 has upgraded Intel central processing units New domestically developed FeiTeng-1000 CPUs have also been installed, the National University of Defense Technology said.

Tianhe-1 has begun trial use among target clients, including the Tianjin Meteorological Bureau and the National Offshore Oil Corporation data center. "It can also serve biomedical research," said Liu Guangming, director of the National Center for Supercomputing.

Beijing seeks 'to cooperate with countries' over use of vital metals

China said on Thursday that it will not use rare earths as a diplomatic "bargaining tool", in response to challenges against its management of the vital metals.

It also said measures to restrict the exploitation, production and export of rare earths are in line with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

Zhu Hongren, spokesman for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said at a press conference in Beijing that China will seek international cooperation to solve recent disputes over rare earths.

"China will not use rare earths as an instrument for bargaining," said Zhu. "Instead, we hope to cooperate with other countries in the use of rare earths on the basis of win-win outcomes and jointly protect the non-renewable resource."

China has cut export quotas for rare earths, vital for the production of a range of high-tech products, as reserves slumped, due in part to smuggling.

Robotic Limbs that Plug into the Brain

Lifelike LimbsScientists are testing whether brain signals can control sophisticated prosthetic arms.

Most of the robotic arms now in use by some amputees are of limited practicality; they have only two to three degrees of freedom, allowing the user to make a single movement at a time. And they are controlled with conscious effort, meaning the user can do little else while moving the limb.

A new generation of much more sophisticated and lifelike prosthetic arms, sponsored by the Department of Defense's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), may be available within the next five to 10 years. Two different prototypes that move with the dexterity of a natural limb and can theoretically be controlled just as intuitively--with electrical signals recorded directly from the brain--are now beginning human tests.

An IT guru on Wednesday called on the founders as well as shareholders of Chinese companies to make their management team more professional.

A company will experience growing pains at every stage of its growth, and problems such as disagreement between majority shareholders and professional managers could be detrimental to its survival, said James Ding, chairman of AsiaInfo-Linkage Inc, a leading provider of telecom software solutions and IT security products and services.

The problems that Gome Electrical Appliances, China's second-largest electronics retailer, encountered were most typical, Ding said at the 2010 Tsinghua Management Forum held in Beijing on Wednesday.
