China's market for mobile chat applications has never been so crowded especially after Alibaba Group Holding Ltd - the country's largest e-commerce company - officially joined the fray on Monday with the launch of its first social networking app.

The app named Laiwang, which means come and go in Chinese, is the first product unveiled to the public after the company announced an internal restructuring program earlier this month with a strong focus on the mobile Internet business.

Just two years ago next month, Tencent Holdings Ltd introduced a mobile instant-message application called WeChat. It already has 200 million users, including Lai Jingkui, a teacher in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, who uses the "Drift Bottle" function to find friends.

SoLoMo: AutoNavi, Sina partner to integrate their location and social services

AUTONAVI, China's largest mobile map service provider, and Sina Weibo plan to integrate their location and social services as both firms aim to tap their total user base of about half a billion users.

With 400 million users, Sina is likely to yield income from the location service through its popular twitter-like Weibo services in the long run. AutoNavi has 100 million users in the domestic market.

AutoNavi Holdings Ltd, China's No 1 navigation provider by market share, is expecting mobile Internet could drive the growth of the company in the coming years as the number of smartphone users hits nearly 300 million in the country.

"Map and navigation services on mobile devices are set to be a gateway for us to embrace mobile Internet, the next big trend in the industry," said Jiang Derong, co-founder of AutoNavi.

China Cloud: Nothing cloudy in Baidu plan

BAIDU, China's largest search engine provider, will invest about 10 billion yuan (US$1.6 billion) to build cloud computing centers to attract web-based software developers as it seeks to offer more services to users.

Baidu will also allow application developers to access freely its cloud computing capabilities, the firm said yesterday. It hopes this move may help attract more smartphone users by providing them with a wider range of web-based services.

Shanghai: Real ID required for free airport Wi-Fi

TRAVELERS logging onto free Wi-Fi services at the city's two airports now need to use their real identification to register, Shanghai Airport Authority announced yesterday.

Cell phone users registered with a local mobile operator can go through the verification by logging in with the password automatically sent to the phone via text message, while roaming or foreign passengers can acquire a password by scanning identification documents such as passports and ID cards, according to the airport operator.

MORE Chinese people are using smartphones and tablets to search for incredible sporting feats and news about celebrities, according to recent reports from Google and Adobe.

Mobile search volume jumped in Asia during the Olympics, especially in Japan, South Korea and China. Fourteen percent of mobile searches in China are related to the ongoing Olympics, Google said yesterday.

i-Shanghai: Free Wi-Fi service at public places

China Mobile web user base tops PC surfers

THE user base of mobile Internet has surpassed that of personal computer users for the first time in China, the world's No. 1 dot-com market by Internet population, a national-level Internet research organization said yesterday.

By the end of June, the number of China's netizens is said to have reached 538 million with a penetration rate of 39.3 percent, 1.6 percentage points more compared to the level at the end of last year, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.

SHANGHAI will upgrade its Wi-Fi network with more hot spots and higher security levels as it seeks to establish itself as a "wireless city" under the city's 12th Five-Year (2011-2015) Plan.

By 2013, Shanghai will have more than 22,000 Wi-Fi hot spots, covering all major public areas, according to the Shanghai Radio Administration Bureau.

Internet: Baidu’s Mobile Strategy Is Actually a Cloud Strategy, and It Could Be a Winner

While industry watchers gnash teeth about Google and Facebook’s ability to adapt for the mobile era, in China similar concerns surround Baidu, a 12-year-old company that has built a $37.6 billion business largely on the back of PC-based search. After visiting Baidu’s Beijing headquarters today, however, I’m convinced that the juggernaut has what its American counterparts lack: a coherent and sustainable long-term strategy for mobile.

That was somewhat surprising to me. I had been told by informed people that the company’s mobile products teams were struggling, and I had read that founder and CEO Robin Li had initially misread the big shift to mobile. Analysts, too, have so far been underwhelmed by Baidu’s ability to react to the mobile transition.
