More than 2.2 million Chinese are working for the country's rapidly expanding electronic commerce industry as of June, the People's Daily reported Sunday.

The e-commerce sector also helped to create more than 16 million jobs in other industrial sectors, the newspaper quoted statistics released by the China Enterprise Evaluation Association and the China Gold & Silver Trade Center.

China's market for mobile chat applications has never been so crowded especially after Alibaba Group Holding Ltd - the country's largest e-commerce company - officially joined the fray on Monday with the launch of its first social networking app.

The app named Laiwang, which means come and go in Chinese, is the first product unveiled to the public after the company announced an internal restructuring program earlier this month with a strong focus on the mobile Internet business.

During the first half of 2013, the trading scale of China's Internet retailing market increased by 47.3% year-on-year to CNY754.2 billion, accounting for 6.8% of the total retail sales of consumer goods in the country.

The report published by China e-Business Research Center predicts that for the entire year of 2013, the trading scale of online shopping will reach CNY1.741 trillion.

Leading Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group and several logistics companies will jointly launch a logistics network on May 28, marking the group's latest expansion move after establishing an online payment and micro loan business.

The network, called the China Smart Logistics Network, will be chaired by Jack Ma, Alibaba's former CEO, while Yintai Group's chairman Shen Guojun will serve as the network's CEO.

Chinese coupon provider Velo and group buying website Didatuan.com announced via internal emails that the two companies have completed a formal integration.

After the integration, a new company will be established and maintain the Velo brand. Song Zhongjie, former chief executive officer of Didatuan.com, has been appointed chief executive officer of the new company.

E-commerce: China online retail market exceeds 1 trillion yuan

China is approaching a quarter of a billion online shoppers according to data from the China E-Commerce Research Center (CECRC). Recent research shows 247 million online customers in 2012, up 21.7 percent year on year from the 203 million in 2011, and an expected 310 million by the end of 2013.

Moreover, the scale of transactions in the Chinese online retail market in 2012 increased to 1.32 trillion yuan with a year-on-year growth rate of 64.7 percent, accounting for 6.3 percent of the total sales of Chinese social consumption retail goods, increasing from the 4.4 percent in 2011.

Internet: Alibaba merges two cloud subsidiaries

Aliyun and net.cn, two cloud computing internet service companies under China's largest internet company Alibaba Group, will be merged as a new company retaining the Aliyun name, reports Chinese IT news website ChinaByte.

The move also marks the end of net.cn's initial public offering attempt in the United States. Alibaba Group had announced the application in September 2011 after purchasing the internet company in 2009.

China's Internet user base will reach 800 million in 2015, according to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). As explained by MIIT minister Miao Wei, as the MIIT speeds up its "Broadband China" project and strengthens broadband construction in China, the number of Internet users in the country will continue to increase rapidly.

According to Miao, the MIIT will continue to expand the development of mobile Internet, e-commerce, cloud computing, and M2M information services in China with the goal of reaching 18 trillion yuan of annual ecommerce transactions, 2.3 million new jobs in the Internet sector, and yearly software and information service revenue of 4 trillion yuan by 2015.

360buy is upgrading the its group-buying business for independent operation in the future, according to a company announcement on Jan. 7. This follows Chinese group buying companies including 55tuan.com, meituan.com and manzuo.com, announcing successive profitability.

According to the announcement, Zhang Shouchuan, vice chairman of 360buy’s open-to-public platform is taking responsible for the new,separate group-buying business.
