The connection between Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, China's biggest telecom equipment maker by revenue, and Italian Supercoppa (Italian Super Cup), does not only rest on the fact they share the same birth year.

Established in the southern coastal city of Shenzhen in 1987, Huawei has grown into a top-level telecom hardware giant that competes with the likes of Sweden's Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson.

Huawei wins US court order on IPR

Huawei wins us court IPRHUAWEI Technologies Co has won a United States court order to ban Motorola disclosing its intellectual property rights to Nokia Siemens Networks which hopes to buy the American firm's network business, the Shenzhen-based firm said yesterday.

In Chicago, US District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman said on Tuesday that Huawei has shown a "reasonable likelihood of success" on the merits of its claim that Motorola Solutions and Nokia Siemens Networks might misappropriate trade secrets, and that "irreparable competitive harm" could result.

In January, Huawei filed the lawsuit against former partner Motorola to stop it transferring IPR to Nokia Siemens Networks, which seeks to buy Motorola's network business for US$1.2 billion.

Huawei said the acquisition deal would transfer the Chinese firm's core technologies to Nokia Siemens Networks, one of its biggest rivals globally.

Since 2000, Huawei's products have been distributed by Motorola under the latter's brand.

The success of Huawei, the China's biggest telecommunications equipment maker, in securing the court order marked the growing awareness of IPR protection in China, industry insiders said.

Nearly half of Huawei's more than 100,000 employees are involved in research and development, and the company pumps in an average of 10 percent of its total revenue to R&D annually.

Huawei is the world's No. 2 network equipment maker.

Huawei sues Motorola over intellectual property right

China's Huawei Technologies Co sued Motorola and Nokia Siemens Networks on Monday in order to protect its intellectual property right, the company said in a press release.

The lawsuit, filed in US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, marks the first time Huawei has sued a US company.

Huawei said it seeks to stop the planned $1.2 billion sale of Motorola's networks business to the European company.

Motorola and Nokia Siemens Networks announced their deal in July. The transaction was initially targeted to close by the end of 2010, but the companies are still waiting for approval from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce's Anti-Monopoly Bureau. Regulatory bodies in the United States, the European Union and six other countries have okayed the deal. Nokia Siemens Networks said in December that it is now aiming to close the transaction this quarter.

Businesses reminded that necessity is the true mother of invention

It is hard to imagine any issue more central to Chinese enterprises today than innovation. Rising per capita incomes and wage rates will increasingly make it more difficult for Chinese companies to compete just on the basis of cost efficiency. The imperatives for a shift from a single-minded focus on cost reduction to a focus also on innovation are very strong and very clear.
