Qiao LAB

THE government has started building charging stations along major expressways in Shanghai and neighboring provinces to encourage the use of pollution-free electric vehicles.

The lack of a more complete battery-charging network for the public is a big barrier hampering development of electric cars and buses, according to the transport authorities.

Qiao LAB

SHANGHAI needs more energy-efficient buildings and a new data platform will help building operators reduce usage. Meanwhile, there's a lot of money to be made in retrofitting energy-guzzling buildings. Fu Chenghao and Zha Minjie report for Earth Day.

While "green" buildings are designed to use minimal energy, actual consumption frequently doubles expectations and in some cases may be five times greater.

Energy: US carbon tech firms flock to China for coal projects

Posted by Qiao LAB in US , tech , Energy , Coal , China

Qiao LAB

CHINA is the coal capital of the world. With few of its own oil and gas resources, the nation depends on its vast coal reserves to literally fuel growth. Expanding in recent years at a rate of one new coal-fired power plant a week on average, the country's coal capacity is expected to triple that of the United States by 2015.

China's dependence on the dirty, sooty mineral, in turn, is a shot in the arm for cleaner, low-carbon coal technologies. As the world's leading carbon emitter, China has targeted energy and environmental conservation as one of its key growth industries in the 12th Five-year Plan.

The nuclear safety plan drafted by the National Nuclear Safety Administration is expected to be finished in August and submitted to the State Council, China's Cabinet, for approval, the China Securities Journal reported Friday, citing a relevant insider.

The insider also revealed that if the plan gets approval, it would come out within the year. And it is expected any proposal for new nuclear plant projects will not be granted in the next two years.

After the nuclear crisis at Fukushima, Japan, the State Council clearly indicated that before the release of a nuclear safety plan, China would suspend approval for the nuclear plants.

Energy Efficiency: China offers rewards to energy efficient companies

Posted by Qiao LAB in Industry , energy efficiency , Energy , China

Qiao LAB

China will continue to allocate funds to offer rewards for enterprises that refit their production techniques and facilities with energy-efficient technologies, the Ministry of Finance said on Friday.

The move aims to promote green technologies and increase energy efficiency in the world's second largest economy, which has vowed to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced per unit of gross domestic product by 40 to 45 percent by the end of 2020, the ministry said in a statement on its website.

The prerequisite for getting the rewards is that companies must have consumed more than 20,000 tonnes of coal equivalent (TCE) per year before adopting energy-efficient technologies, and save 5,000 tonnes of coal equivalent (TCE) after their tech-transformation.
