Internet: China’s Surprising Advantage Over the US

Posted by China Media LAB in Usa , Travel , Social , Mobile , Internet , Ecommerce

China Media LAB

China’s Internet industry suffers many disadvantages compared to the US. It is burdened by heavy regulation, underpowered data centers, and censorship, just to name a few. But one of its great advantages comes from a counterintuitive source: The country’s underdeveloped tech-commerce infrastructure. The implications are significant, and they are shaping China’s Internet landscape in a way that may ultimately be followed by the US.

In the US, Internet businesses have developed in an environment in which they must compete with already-mature industries that have long had good access to technology. That’s true of ecommerce businesses, for example, which have had to build on, against, or over established bricks-and-mortar networks of retail stores. It’s also true of the online travel industry, which has had to adapt to pre-existing technology systems tied to airlines, agency groups, and, more recently, early-Internet booking verticals such as Expedia and Orbitz.

Shopping in the fashionable stores of New York, London and Paris may soon be a thing of the past for Chinese customers, with online shopping fast changing the retail trade. Unlike popular Western shopping destinations, the online retail market is a new kid on the block. But more importantly, it is the impressive returns being notched up by the sector that are making it a "must-be" market for multinational companies and Western brands.

Up to now, the global retail market has often been dominated by mega brands with shops in prime locations. Shopping was often an experience that also had the added elements of affluence, travel and holiday built into it.

AS consumers weary of carrying bulky membership cards in purses or wallets, Chinese entrepreneur Andy Xue, 37, takes advantage of a blossoming business opportunity.

A year ago, he opened his own mobile application business called Mokard – pronounced similar to "no card" in Chinese. To date, the company has helped around 700,000 consumers to enjoy a smart and light shopping experience by morphing their smartphones into digital membership card packs.

Consumers can "virtualize" current cards by uploading their barcodes through the phone camera, which can be scanned into their shopping profiles in store archives. They can also create on-screen barcodes for new memberships straight on the widget's user interface.
