Outsourcing: China set to be No. 1 in shared services

CHINA will eclipse India to become the world's biggest destination of shared services centers in a few years as it possesses competitive advantages, senior industry executives said at an annual KPMG summit in Shanghai yesterday.

"China is no longer a 'maybe' destination," said Egidio Zarrella, a partner of management consulting at KPMG. "Having an articulated China strategy is essential for an organization with global ambitions."

China's combined advantages of better infrastructure, more quality human resources and still competitive costs will help the country overtake India, the executives said at the annual KPMG China Shared Services Summit.

Green Aviation: Jumbo jet flies on nut-oil fuel

A jumbo jet powered by fuel made from nut oil made a two-hour test flight yesterday as part of a US-Chinese renewable energy partnership.

The Boeing 747 landed at Beijing Capital International Airport at 9:30am after burning more than 10 tons of biofuel.

Internet: Free Wi-Fi Now Fully Available In Taipei

Taipei has now reportedly opened free-of-charge Wi-Fi services, and the number of users has already reached 1.8 million.

Taipei reportedly launched free Wi-Fi services in some special venues in July 2011, and it now opened about 540 access points in outdoor public places as well as access points on about 500 buses, offering free-of-charge Wi-Fi services with bandwidth of 512 Kbps. The Taipei government said there are currently over 2,000 access points in Taipei and they spent proximately NTD30 million in the establishment of these access points.

Taipei's wireless network adopts two types of transmission technologies: WiMax and Wi-Fi. Its structure includes three parts, including a data center, wireless base stations on tall buildings, and wireless access points in various regions.

Internet: 55tuan Latest Group-buying Site to Cut Staff, Shut Offices

55tuan.com has become the latest Chinese group-buying website to carry out staff layoffs and office closures as the once red-hot industry begins to cool, tech website Penn Olson reported.

Over the past few weeks, 55tuan has shuttered 35 offices across the country and laid-off workers in 10 major cities – Nanjing, Jinan, Qingdao, Chengdu, Harbin, Dalian, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Wuhan, and Chongqing.

Forbes China Wealth: The rich get richer, only more slowly

THE combined wealth of the 400 richest people on China's mainland is growing more slowly this year as a result of China's tighter monetary measures and global financial turmoil, Forbes China said yesterday.

The fortunes of the wealthy had risen to a total of US$459 billion by August 19, up 8 percent from last year - 4 percent if counted in yuan - according to the 2011 Forbes China Rich List.

Investments: China M&As expand 6.4%

THE number of merger and acquisition deals in China grew for a second consecutive month in August by 6.4 percent from July to reach 282, according to a report by China Venture.

But the total investment of the deals dropped 28.83 percent from a month ago to 73.3 billion yuan (US$11.47 billion), the research firm said in a report yesterday.

China Satellite TV will reach 200 million rural households

DIRECT-BROADCAST, a satellite TV service, will replace wireless signals for about 200 million rural families in China by 2015.

A pilot project has gone smoothly in Ningxia, Hebei and Inner Mongolia, in the north and northwest of China, since April, according to Zhang Haitao, deputy director of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.

Green Car: Chinese new plans to boost new-energy vehicle purchases

China's State Council, or cabinet, is considering a development plan for new-energy vehicles, according to Su Bo, vice-minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

"All relevant government agencies involved in drafting the plan had a high level of agreement on the plan," Su said at an auto industry conference in Tianjin on Saturday. He didn't give details on when the plan will be approved or the measures proposed.

Electronic Payments: 13 get PBOC licenses

CHINA'S central bank yesterday approved the second group of 13 non-financial institutions, including ChinaPay and Union Mobile Pay, to operate third-party payment services.

Most of the 13 institutions are located in less developed inland regions or provinces such as Inner Mongolia and Sichuan and they handle prepayment card services.

Internet: Sina's Tudou stake will help Weibo.com

SINA Corp, operator of China's most popular microblogging site, said it has bought 9.05 percent in China's second largest video site Tudou as it seeks to improve the attractiveness of its Weibo.com site to lure more users.

Sina paid US$66.4 million for the stake in Tudou, according to a filing to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc reached an agreement letting the Chinese Internet-video company Youku.com Inc distribute its two "Kung Fu Panda" movies, marking the first time the computer-animation studio's films will be available online in China, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Youku in June announced a distribution agreement with Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. Under the terms of that deal, Youku would add 400 to 500 Warner Bros. titles to its on-demand paid video service, including the "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings" series.
