Energy-efficient lights lack standard on harmful radiation

LOCAL quality authorities said China lacks a standard on electromagnetic radiation released by energy-saving lights, which came after a warning from experts that the radiation could damage people's health.

Experts with the country's environmental-protection watchdogs said the radiation is harmful especially to people having sensitive constitutions.

Green: China to open green building materials lab

The State Key Lab of Green Building Materials is to be opened in Beijing on Feb 28. The lab will be used for basic theory study of the application of green building materials.

Yao Yan, chief scientist of the lab and director of the board and the general manager of China National Building Material Group, announced Monday the lab will also be used for research into the key stages of green building materials' life cycle.

High-Tech: Shanghai's IC sector may grow 12 percent this year

THE revenue of Shanghai's integrated circuit industry, which accounts for one-third of the total revenue nationwide, may grow 12 percent annually this year, higher than China's "zero or single-digit" expansion, according to the IC industry association.

Shanghai's high growth rate is attributed to the strong design sector and expansion of overseas IC firms this year. Xue Zi, deputy general secretary of the Shanghai Integrated Circuit Industry Association (SIA), said yesterday it was the first time in 2011 that the revenue of the local IC design sector surpassed that of the manufacturing sector.

WebTV: PPTV must pay for infringing copyright of Japanese TV series

PPTV was ordered to pay 25,000 yuan (US$3,967) for infringing the copyright of the popular Japanese science fiction TV series "Ultraman Diga" on its online video-sharing platform, the Pudong New Area People's Court said yesterday.

The plaintiff, Shanghai Character License Administrative Co (SCLA), said PPTV uploaded the TV series onto its website on January 26 last year without approval. The video site then screened the series, recommended on a popular animation billboard, to thousands of online viewers free of charge.

Transportation: Low and medium-speed maglev train finishes production in Hunan

CHINA'S new medium and low-speed maglev train rolled off the production line yesterday in central China's Hunan Province.

The three-carriage train is designed to run at a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour and carry 600 passengers, Xinhua news agency reported, citing Xu Zongxiang, general manager of the manufacturer, Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co Ltd, a division of China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Corp.

China will launch more rockets and satellites into space in 2012, reported Tuesday citing the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).

The main contractor for the Chinese space program said during its annual meeting that they will blast off 21 rockets and 30 satellites in the coming year.

Space: Countdown begins for China's man on moon

CHINA will begin preparations to put a man on the moon within the next five years, the Chinese government said yesterday in a white paper on the development of space industry.

Environment: Shanghai's air falls below new PM 2.5 standard

SHANGHAI has failed to meet a proposed air quality standard for the past five years, according to the city's environment watchdog.

Shanghai Environment Monitoring Center data showed that the average density of particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter was higher than the proposed PM2.5 standard every year since the pilot study began in 2005.

Internet: Group-purchase online sites leave a bitter taste

ABOUT 60 percent of consumers who have participated in online group purchases have had their rights violated at least once, according to a survey carried out by a consumer rights watchdog from 22 cities, including Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen, officials said yesterday.

Only 16 percent of the respondents said they were satisfied with the group purchase, where consumers buy a coupon at a discount to use at a local business. Consumers complained that the service they received was worse than group purchase websites advertised, and the refunding process was rather complicated.

A consumer surnamed Li said she bought a billiard coupon from, a group purchase website. But when she went to the billiard bar, she was told that the coupon could not be used.

M-Commerce Start-Up: Consumers shop with virtual cards in smartphones

AS consumers weary of carrying bulky membership cards in purses or wallets, Chinese entrepreneur Andy Xue, 37, takes advantage of a blossoming business opportunity.

A year ago, he opened his own mobile application business called Mokard – pronounced similar to "no card" in Chinese. To date, the company has helped around 700,000 consumers to enjoy a smart and light shopping experience by morphing their smartphones into digital membership card packs.

Consumers can "virtualize" current cards by uploading their barcodes through the phone camera, which can be scanned into their shopping profiles in store archives. They can also create on-screen barcodes for new memberships straight on the widget's user interface.

MORE than half of iPhone and iPad users in China have jail-broken their Apple devices to avoid paying for applications despite Apple making it easier last month for owners to pay using the yuan, research firms said yesterday.

By the end of the second quarter, more than 51 percent of Chinese iPhone and iPad users were found to have jail-broken their devices.
