China UFO draws astronomers into debate over its origin

Posted by Qiao LAB in UFO , Shanghai , China , Beijing , astronomers

Qiao LAB

THE huge, glowing UFO spotted hovering above Shanghai, Beijing and other regions in China on Saturday evening has led to a debate among astronomers who are trying to explain the phenomenon.

The "white ball" was spotted about 9pm above Shanghai by pilots who reported the sightings to the East China Air Traffic Control Bureau. At almost the same time, residents in Beijing, Shanxi and Anhui provinces and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region also witnessed and photographed the similar, round bubble-like object rapidly expanding in the sky.

Yu Jun, a former editor of a scientific magazine and amateur astronomer who witnessed the object, published an analysis saying the expanding bubble likely was a phenomenon caused by the "fuel of a thruster that diffused in outer space."

MICROSOFT co-founder Bill Gates and billionaire investor Warren Buffett said they were impressed at a dinner they held for Chinese millionaires by the passion China's super-rich showed toward giving back to society.

The gathering to discuss philanthropy was hosted by Gates and Buffett in a mansion on the outskirts of Beijing on Wednesday.

"Overall, it was fantastic to see the energy and interest," Gates told a news conference in Beijing. He said that two-thirds of the rich Chinese who were invited to the event attended, and that the discussions about charity were candid and broad-ranging.

There are at least 875,000 US dollar millionaires in China, according to Shanghai-based analyst Rupert Hoogewerf, who studies China's wealthy.

The State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) began stationing examiners at company offices in the Zhongguancun area in Beijing in late August to help with documentation for patent applications.

SIPO patent examiners, working on a "practice basis", are assisting with paperwork and consulting on the spot.

The Zhongguancun area is home to nearly 20,000 high-tech companies and research institutions. The first three examiners began a month-long assignment at China National BlueStar (Group) Corp on August 31.

The program is designed to provide face-to-face communication between corporate intellectual property teams and patent examiners over a range of procedures such as application drafts, reviews and replies.

The administrative officials are also expected to aid companies in identifying technologies with patent potential and avert potential infringement.

Qiao LAB

Peasant inventor working on new 'miracle machine'

Posted by Qiao LAB in Submarine , Peasant inventor , Expo , China , Beijing

Qiao LAB

Nearly a year after Tao Xiangli gained international reputation for his homemade submarine, the self-taught inventor still lives in a tiny room in a hutong in Beijing.

But he has a new ambition: Another invention, which is expected to see the light of day by next month.

Outside his room, situated in a narrow lane cluttered with clotheslines, plants and garbage, is where Tao began building the 6-meter subaqueous in 2009 out of old barrels, pipes and other used construction materials he found at various markets around the city.

Once complete, he trucked the submarine to a lake on the outskirts of the capital, put it in the water, and hoped it would work.

It did, actually.

And shortly after, videos of Tao floating around in the apparatus appeared online, as local and international media pounced on the story. Suddenly, Tao had become a national celebrity, joining the list of a number of other wacky Chinese inventors, who spend their lives building everything from flying machines to Mandarin-speaking robots.

The submarine was sold to Expo 2010 Shanghai, and was displayed in a recent exhibition dedicated to China's "peasant inventors".
