Internet: Alibaba settles row with Yahoo and Softbank

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd reached an agreement on Friday with Yahoo! Inc and Softbank Corp, its largest shareholders, ending a four-month spat over how to compensate investors after an ownership change in China's most popular online-payment service.

Alibaba, which transferred the Alipay unit to a company controlled by Chairman Jack Ma last year, will get as much as $6 billion if Alipay sells shares to the public, according to a statement on July 29. Before any sale, Alibaba will receive 49.9 percent of Alipay's earnings.

ALIPAY is emerging out from its virtual world and taking on the banks and mobile operators by launching a service that allows users to make payments at convenient stores and other offline vendors with their smartphones.

The move reflects the ambition of Alipay, which is owned by Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma and already holds a dominant 46 percent of online payment market.

Jack Ma, founder and chief executive of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, said compensation negotiations between the management and Yahoo Inc and Softbank Corp are still going on, and he declined to say when they might be completed.

Last month, Yahoo said it had been blindsided when Alibaba transferred its online payment arm, Alipay.com Co Ltd, to a new company controlled by Ma.

Alipay snatches online payment crown from PayPal

Alipay.com Co Ltd, the online payment subsidiary of Alibaba Group, has become the world's largest online payment company, beating PayPal, said Wang Gang, general manager of the merchant division of Alipay.com.

Alipay has more than 500 million registered users, processes seven million transactions every day and has a daily transaction volume of 2 billion yuan ($302 million), Wang said at a news briefing on Tuesday.

"The figures have surpassed PayPal in terms of the number of registered users and the transaction volume," he said.

Alipay's performance surpassed the expectations of Shao Xiaofeng, former president of Alipay.

He said in an interview with Reuters last year that he expected Alipay to overtake PayPal in 2011.
