China e-commerce Alibaba launches mobile chat app

China's market for mobile chat applications has never been so crowded especially after Alibaba Group Holding Ltd - the country's largest e-commerce company - officially joined the fray on Monday with the launch of its first social networking app.

The app named Laiwang, which means come and go in Chinese, is the first product unveiled to the public after the company announced an internal restructuring program earlier this month with a strong focus on the mobile Internet business.

e-Commerce: Taobao bans QR codes: a swipe at WeChat?

Over the weekend, Alibaba’s flagship C2C ecommerce platform Taobao circulated a memo to its vendors announcing that QR codes with links to external websites would no longer be allowed.

“We have discovered some sellers are using QR codes with external links to circumvent the normal transaction process,” reads a section of the memo as reprinted on TechWeb. New image uploads with externally-linking QR codes will not be allowed; those vendors who already have uploaded such images to the site have one month to remove them.

Leading Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group and several logistics companies will jointly launch a logistics network on May 28, marking the group's latest expansion move after establishing an online payment and micro loan business.

The network, called the China Smart Logistics Network, will be chaired by Jack Ma, Alibaba's former CEO, while Yintai Group's chairman Shen Guojun will serve as the network's CEO.

Aliyun and net.cn, two cloud computing internet service companies under China's largest internet company Alibaba Group, will be merged as a new company retaining the Aliyun name, reports Chinese IT news website ChinaByte.

The move also marks the end of net.cn's initial public offering attempt in the United States. Alibaba Group had announced the application in September 2011 after purchasing the internet company in 2009.

e-Commerce: Taobao clicks in sales of US$159b

CHINA'S largest e-commerce group yesterday reported record transactions of 1 trillion yuan (US$159 billion) in the first 11 months of this year, or equivalent to 5.4 percent of the country's total retail sales last year.

Alibaba.com said its consumer-to-consumer site Taobao.com achieved 800 billion yuan of sales and the business-to-consumer arm Tmall generated around 200 billion yuan. The total figure nearly doubled that of the whole of 2011.

Alibaba.com, a leading business-to-business website of the Chinese Internet giant Alibaba Group, was delisted from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange Wednesday.

The withdrawal of the listing, signaling privatization of the group's only publicly traded subsidiary, took effect at 4 p.m., according to a statement jointly issued by the group and the website Wednesday morning.

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd reached an agreement on Friday with Yahoo! Inc and Softbank Corp, its largest shareholders, ending a four-month spat over how to compensate investors after an ownership change in China's most popular online-payment service.

Alibaba, which transferred the Alipay unit to a company controlled by Chairman Jack Ma last year, will get as much as $6 billion if Alipay sells shares to the public, according to a statement on July 29. Before any sale, Alibaba will receive 49.9 percent of Alipay's earnings.

Mobile: Alibaba Group to launch mobile OS in Q3

China's top e-commerce group Alibaba Group is preparing to launch a mobile operating system in the third quarter, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

The mobile operating system, to be developed by Alibaba's cloud computing unit, will also provide mobile applications, the paper said quoting an unnamed source close to the matter.

ALIPAY is emerging out from its virtual world and taking on the banks and mobile operators by launching a service that allows users to make payments at convenient stores and other offline vendors with their smartphones.

The move reflects the ambition of Alipay, which is owned by Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma and already holds a dominant 46 percent of online payment market.

EBay Inc's PayPal online payment system will end a partnership with Alibaba Group's Aliexpress.com beginning Aug 3, Shanghai Securities News reported Tuesday.

Aliexpress.com, an international wholesale platform for China's domestic vendors to supply small orders to foreign buyers, started its partnership with PayPal in April 2010 to use PayPal as one of its international online payment methods.

CHINA'S e-commerce giant is stepping up its heated rivalry with bricks-and-mortar retailers with the launch of a five-story home furnishings showroom in Beijing.

Alibaba Group's Taobao, an Internet platform through which an estimated 3 percent of all retail sales in China pass, opened the showroom on Friday for customers to try out sofas, tables and other big-ticket items before placing an order online.
