Chinese Scientists work on in-flight cell phone system

LOCAL scientists are developing an in-flight wireless entertainment system allowing airline passengers to use cell phones onboard, experts said yesterday.

Currently, commercial aircraft use heavy cables for entertainment systems onboard and there are restrictions on cell phones, said officials of the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences at Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park.

But in a joint project between the institute and Boeing, these problems could be solved within three years, SARI officials said.

The institute said this is an example of it developing new technologies based on market demand through cooperation with business. To achieve this, SARI has departments focusing on integrated science and new materials, information technology, space and marine technology, energy and environment, life sciences and an industrial technology center.

At present, only 5 percent of domestic research achievements make it to industrial use; the institute aims to achieve a 30 percent target by 2015.

SARI will also set up a research-oriented university in 2020, recruiting 2,000 students for bachelor degrees and 6,000 for masters and doctorate degrees, said Feng Songlin, the institute director.

Yesterday, SARI signed agreements on joint laboratories with 12 enterprises and work began on a 700 million yuan (US$105 million) key scientific center on protein research.

C919 scheduled to make maiden flight in 2014; delivery seen in 2016

China's challenger to Boeing and Airbus announced the first 100 orders for its single-aisle commercial aircraft from four Chinese airlines and two leasing companies, revving up global competition in the domestic aviation market, predicted to be worth more than $450 billion over the next two decades.

The breakthrough orders for the 160-seat C919 were placed at the Zhuhai air show by four of China's major carriers - Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan Airlines - and the airplane leasing company General Electric Capital Aviation Services of the United States as well as a Chinese leasing firm.

The aircraft's producer, Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (COMAC), did not give details of how many planes each prospective buyer had ordered, nor of the prices.

It is the first time buyers have committed to the aircraft, which COMAC expects to start building next year, followed by a maiden flight in 2014 and first delivery in 2016.

"The customer signing lays a market foundation for the C919, which has smoothly entered the engineering development phase," Zhang Qingwei, COMAC chairman, said in a statement.

A similar deal for Airbus or Boeing jets would be worth about $7 billion at list prices, but aircraft are normally sold at a discount of at least 20 percent and analysts said China would have to work hard to woo foreign airlines.

China Movie royalty pay plan leaves many in the dark

Qiao LAB

China's Film Copyright Association has announced plans to collect copyright royalties from Internet cafes and public transport companies for their screenings of movies.

But skeptical locals wonder how - and whether - the plan will work.

Starting January 1, Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu Province and several other provinces will be the first areas where the charges are collected.

Internet cafes are to pay 7.5 percent of each computer's hourly charge, multiplied by the number of computers, every day, according to the regulation approved by the National Copyright Administration.

Boing Phantom Works

The Boeing Company has unveiled the hydrogen-powered Phantom Eye unmanned airborne system for collecting data and communications, a demonstrator that will stay aloft at 65,000 feet for up to four days.

Phantom Eye is powered by two 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engines that provide 150 horsepower each. It has a 150-foot wingspan, will cruise at approximately 150 knots, and can carry up to a 450-pound payload.

Later this summer, Phantom Eye will be shipped to NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., to begin a series of ground and taxi tests in preparation for its first flight in early 2011. That debut flight is expected to last between four and eight hours.
