e-Commerce: Top Chinese B2C Internet Shopping Market Tmall.com, JD.com, Suning.com

During the first half of 2013, the trading scale of China's Internet retailing market increased by 47.3% year-on-year to CNY754.2 billion, accounting for 6.8% of the total retail sales of consumer goods in the country.

The report published by China e-Business Research Center predicts that for the entire year of 2013, the trading scale of online shopping will reach CNY1.741 trillion.

Zhang Mengyi, a law school student at the Communication University of China, and three of her classmates are embarking on an experimental project to create a report in 2013 that will show the development of China's personal information protection laws.

IPR: In China foreign software equally treated in government procurement

A senior Chinese copyright official said on Tuesday that foreign providers received equal treatment during a massive government procurement of licensed software.

From late 2010, the Chinese central and provincial governments had spend more than 1 billion yuan (156.9 million U.S. dollars) on 158,823 operating system licenses, 506,693 copies of office software, plus anti-virus and other special-purpose software in a national anti-piracy campaign which ran till the end of June.

Environment: Shanghai's air falls below new PM 2.5 standard

SHANGHAI has failed to meet a proposed air quality standard for the past five years, according to the city's environment watchdog.

Shanghai Environment Monitoring Center data showed that the average density of particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter was higher than the proposed PM2.5 standard every year since the pilot study began in 2005.

Internet: Free Wi-Fi Now Fully Available In Taipei

Taipei has now reportedly opened free-of-charge Wi-Fi services, and the number of users has already reached 1.8 million.

Taipei reportedly launched free Wi-Fi services in some special venues in July 2011, and it now opened about 540 access points in outdoor public places as well as access points on about 500 buses, offering free-of-charge Wi-Fi services with bandwidth of 512 Kbps. The Taipei government said there are currently over 2,000 access points in Taipei and they spent proximately NTD30 million in the establishment of these access points.

Taipei's wireless network adopts two types of transmission technologies: WiMax and Wi-Fi. Its structure includes three parts, including a data center, wireless base stations on tall buildings, and wireless access points in various regions.

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc reached an agreement letting the Chinese Internet-video company Youku.com Inc distribute its two "Kung Fu Panda" movies, marking the first time the computer-animation studio's films will be available online in China, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Youku in June announced a distribution agreement with Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. Under the terms of that deal, Youku would add 400 to 500 Warner Bros. titles to its on-demand paid video service, including the "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings" series.

Microblog: Weibo may generate cash in H1

SINA.COM, operator of China's most popular microblogging platform Weibo.com, plans to make money from the service as early as the first half of 2012 and will continue investing in the microblogging service to cement its market position.

Sina, which also operates one of the leading Chinese web portals, said profit plunged 60 percent in the second quarter from a year ago to US$10 million as it spent heavily to promote the microblogging service and upgraded products to retain more users.

e-Commerce: Sina acquires 19% stake in Mecox Lane

SINA Corp said it will acquire 19 percent of Nasdaq-listed online apparel vendor Mecox Lane for US$66 million as the Chinese web portal expands its business into the booming online shopping market. "E-commerce is growing very fast in China, and this investment is our first step to be involved in the market," Sina President and Chief Executive Officer Charles Chao told an analysts' conference call yesterday.

Sina will name a person to Mecox Lane's board of directors to replace an executive from Sequoia Capital, the venture capital firm for Mecox Lane.
