The China Africa Development Fund and China Development Bank have promised to invest heavily into the digitalization of TV in African countries.
Since 2007, $100 million has been provided to the project by the China Africa Development Fund and another $50 million is coming, according to Chi Jianxin, president of the fund, speaking at the African Digital TV Development Ministerial Seminar on Sunday.

TRAVELERS logging onto free Wi-Fi services at the city's two airports now need to use their real identification to register, Shanghai Airport Authority announced yesterday.
Cell phone users registered with a local mobile operator can go through the verification by logging in with the password automatically sent to the phone via text message, while roaming or foreign passengers can acquire a password by scanning identification documents such as passports and ID cards, according to the airport operator.

Venture capital investment in Chinese mainland companies declined significantly in the first six months, the latest sign that the world's second-largest economy is slowing.
According to Dow Jones VentureSource, which tracks venture-backed companies, the value of venture capital investments in Chinese companies was 1.9 billion US dollars in the six months to June, down 43 percent from the same period last year.

CHINESE game developers are trying to break into or make further gains in overseas markets after capturing a more than 70 percent share of the domestic market, it was revealed at ChinaJoy 2012 in Shanghai yesterday.
Top game firms, including Shanda Entertainment, NetEase Inc and Perfect World, are attending the five-day China Digital Entertainment Expo and Conference, also known as ChinaJoy. Though the expo kicked off on Wednesday, yesterday was the first day it was open to the public.

PEOPLE still enjoy reading books the old-fashioned way - on paper - in the digital age, according to a survey released by the Shanghai Statistics Bureau yesterday.
Local residents have quickly adapted to e-reading, according to the survey based on telephone interviews of 1,000 people from various age groups. But the majority of people said they read better on printed books rather than on cell phones, laptops and e-readers, the survey said.

CHINA'S new medium and low-speed maglev train rolled off the production line yesterday in central China's Hunan Province.
The three-carriage train is designed to run at a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour and carry 600 passengers, Xinhua news agency reported, citing Xu Zongxiang, general manager of the manufacturer, Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co Ltd, a division of China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Corp.

SHANGHAI International Group is to set up a venture capital firm to offer finance to small and medium enterprises as part of the city's strategy to support the underfinanced sector.
The investment arm of the Shanghai city government will invest 1 billion yuan (US$156 million), including 500 million yuan of city government revenue, in the new firm, the Shanghai Financial Services Office said yesterday.
