SHANGHAI will upgrade its Wi-Fi network with more hot spots and higher security levels as it seeks to establish itself as a "wireless city" under the city's 12th Five-Year (2011-2015) Plan.

By 2013, Shanghai will have more than 22,000 Wi-Fi hot spots, covering all major public areas, according to the Shanghai Radio Administration Bureau.

Mobile: Shanghai users to get 4G phones next year

THE first 4G mobile phone based on homegrown technology is expected to debut in Shanghai in the first half of next year, when commercial use of 4G services will have begun, China Mobile said yesterday.

China Mobile, the world's biggest mobile operator with around 700 million subscribers, has established a TD-LTE (time division-long term evolution) network covering areas within the Inner Ring Road in Shanghai, to provide much faster network speeds. "We will provide TD-LTE handsets and related services next year," Mao Weiliang, Shanghai Mobile's vice general manager of data services division, said during the annual Shanghai Telecommunications Conference.

It's rare to see two famous Chinese business leaders engaging in a tit-for-tat spat publicly just because they are competitors. However, it happened between Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi Corp, and Zhou Hongyi, chairman of the Chinese online security software developer Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Both of them lost their tempers and criticized each other on micro blogs.

On May 15, when Xiaomi released its youth version smartphone at 1,499 yuan ($235), Qihoo 360 announced a partnership with Huawei Technologies Co Ltd to introduce a similar smartphone model at the same price.

4G: China Mobile Links Hangzhou's TD-LTE With Hong Kong Network

Chinese telecom operator China Mobile has realized two-way roaming between the TD-LTE network in Hangzhou and LTE FDD network in Hong Kong.

This is reportedly the first time for the company to realize data roaming between the two LTE networks and it also marks the business merger of the two networks.

Mobile: China select cities to pilot own 4G by year end

Telco: Deutsche Telekom establishes global development center in central China

Deutsche Telekom, the largest telecommunications company in Europe, announced the establishment of its first China-based global development center on Saturday.

The development center, located in Wuhan, capital city of central China's Hubei Province, was opened on Thursday. It will focus on the development of core technology, including vehicle telematics, cloud computing and air traffic tech.

Mobile: Smartphones beat TV for 54% of Chinese users

OVER half of Chinese smartphone owners would sooner give up TV than their mobile device, which represents a huge growth opportunity in the world's biggest phone market, according to a Google survey released yesterday.

In the survey, 54 percent of consumers preferred mobile devices than watching TV, said Google which developed Android, the world's most popular smartphone system.

The connection between Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, China's biggest telecom equipment maker by revenue, and Italian Supercoppa (Italian Super Cup), does not only rest on the fact they share the same birth year.

Established in the southern coastal city of Shenzhen in 1987, Huawei has grown into a top-level telecom hardware giant that competes with the likes of Sweden's Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson.

Mobile China: More growth expected in 3G

THE number of 3G phone users in China is close to 10 percent of the country's total mobile phone user base, and this figure is viewed as the point at which 3G is expected to grow rapidly in the next few years, the top industry regulator said yesterday.

Even as 3G is set to surge, China plans to issue 4G licenses after commercial testing has been completed, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said. The 4G technology is 10-20 times faster than the current 3G.

ZTE Corp plans to invest "several hundred million" dollars in Brazil to make the region its biggest overseas manufacturing base for handsets and tablet computers, China's biggest listed telecommunications equipment maker said yesterday.

Shenzhen-listed ZTE - now the world's No. 5 handset vendor - also plans to double its mobile phone sales in Brazil this year to ride on the growing smartphone demand, said Wei Zheng, the firm's vice president for Brazil.

Bert Nordberg, president and chief executive officer of Sony Ericsson Mobile, said the company hopes to work on the time division long-term evolution (TD-LTE) technology, which is going global.

Mobile: Alibaba Group to launch mobile OS in Q3

China's top e-commerce group Alibaba Group is preparing to launch a mobile operating system in the third quarter, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

The mobile operating system, to be developed by Alibaba's cloud computing unit, will also provide mobile applications, the paper said quoting an unnamed source close to the matter.
