Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer Hisense (600060.SH) has announced it will unveil its USD 99 Hisense Plus Google TV set-top box (STB) during the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin (August 31 - September 5).

Google executives have said the new Hisense Google TV offering has been designed to intuitively search and sort through millions of channels and shows across live television, content services, home networks, apps, and the web.

Media: Shanda Games makes foray into movies

SHANDA Games will invest heavily to produce and distribute computer-graphic movies based on its games as the game developer expands into the film industry, marking a key step in its long-term "online Disneyland" vision, the Shanghai-based company said yesterday.

Shanda Games' 18-fund, an investment arm, with raised funds totaling 1 billion yuan (US$157 million), focusing on game and other entertainment sectors, was also launched yesterday in Suzhou, aiming to establish itself as an entertainment industry base.

With this, Shanda has joined the wave of game-and-film convergence, pioneered by firms such as Beijing-based game developer Kylin, which invested in producing "Painted Skin 2," the country's highest grossing local film so far this year.

CHINA will support more animation TV programs and film production, new-media cartoon and game development and will establish five to 10 leading animation firms under a plan for the industry over the period through 2015.

Shanghai will also take measures to boost the animation industry such as providing finance to mobile cartoon and game firms and establish a new comic book center, industry officials said yesterday at the CCG Expo 2012, an animation and game show, in Shanghai.

Mobile:Free apps preferred by mainland Apple users

CHINESE iPhone and iPad users do not seem willing to pay for applications although they may have paid several thousand yuan for the high-end mobile devices.

The downloading of applications in Apple Inc's stores has tripled in the past year and propelled the Chinese mainland to become the second-biggest App Store market but the revenue generated by the apps is limited, a report by a mobile application researcher said yesterday.

IPR: Apple faces new legal challenge in China in Voice Recognition

A CHINESE technology firm has filed a legal challenge accusing US giant Apple of infringing its patented voice recognition software with its Siri function on the iPhone, the company said yesterday.

HUAYI Brothers Media has decided to use Shanghai Media Group's BesTV as a new channel to release its new films, company officials said this week.

Kung fu star Jackie Chan's latest action movie, "Chinese Zodiac" and Stephen Fung's martial arts film "Tai Chi" are among the films to be shown on BesTV's IPTV, digital TV and website later this year.

Media: China's Got Talent' producers seek gifted amateur filmmakers

THE reality competition series "China's Got Talent" has invested 1 million yuan (US$157,000) in selecting outstanding short films and original scripts, producers of the show said at the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival.

So far, several thousand short films made by amateur filmmakers have been submitted through 10 or so websites such as Youku.com and Sina.com. All of the entries are themed on dreams.

The pudgy penguin, the well-known icon of China's biggest Internet company Tencent Holdings Ltd, might join "hands" with Donald Duck in a bid to tap into China's animation industry, media reports say.

Tencent is negotiating with the Walt Disney Co on a cooperation deal to explore the nation's blooming animation market, the China Business News reported on Thursday, citing an anonymous source from the Chinese company.

Mobile: Metro App Offers Real-Time Advice

METRO operator Shanghai Shentong yesterday launched a free cellphone app, allowing travelers to access Metro information, including maps, stations, transit routes and the location of toilets on the city's 11 Metro lines. The app is also intended to provide real-time advice on which lines are crowded and suggest alternative routes. Neighborhoods near the Metro stations will also be shown.

Initially, the app is available only for Apple devices but will be extended to other mobile phones next year. An English version is also in the pipeline.

Hacked Apple devices rises sharply

MORE than half of iPhone and iPad users in China have jail-broken their Apple devices to avoid paying for applications despite Apple making it easier last month for owners to pay using the yuan, research firms said yesterday.

By the end of the second quarter, more than 51 percent of Chinese iPhone and iPad users were found to have jail-broken their devices.

DIRECT-BROADCAST, a satellite TV service, will replace wireless signals for about 200 million rural families in China by 2015.

A pilot project has gone smoothly in Ningxia, Hebei and Inner Mongolia, in the north and northwest of China, since April, according to Zhang Haitao, deputy director of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.

Warner Bros Entertainment will begin offering its new releases and catalog films to Chinese consumers this summer in a tieup with its Chinese partner, marking its advance into one of the world's most populous markets, the company announced on Tuesday.

The Chinese consumers will be able to access Warner Bros' classic films including the latest releases like "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 1," as the Hollywood mogul launches a partnership through a distribution agreement with YOU On Demand Media, affiliated with YOU On Demand Holdings Inc in China.
