Mainland's huge bite of global chip sector

China Semiconductor ChipTHE Chinese mainland now accounts for 41 percent of global semiconductor consumption market, an increase of 3 percentage points from the previous year, thanks to its increasing share of the global production of electronic devices such as mobile phones and computers, PricewaterhouseCoopers said in a research note yesterday.

"The domestic market continued to outperform the rest of the world and expand its footprint in the global semiconductor market place," Raman Chitkara, PwC's global technology industry leader, said in the note.

By the end of 2009, the mainland was the No. 1 consumer of semiconductors as it accounted for 41 percent of global semiconductor consumption. It also accounted for 50 percent of global semiconductor initial public offerings and employed 25 percent of the total global semiconductor workforce.

RFID TicketAn increase in tourism and large-scale events, such as the Expo 2010 Shanghai and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, has created a sudden growth in demand for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tickets, industry experts have said.

RFID is a wireless automatic recognition technology that makes counterfeiting difficult.

The number of tourists in the country is estimated to reach 3.3 billion by 2015, the China National Tourism Administration has said. In addition, the number of event visitors is expected to reach 500 million. These two industries will become the main consumers of RFID entrance tickets.

New Chip Captures Hard-to-Find Tumor Cells

The devices may one day help patients skip invasive and painful biopsies.

Technologies that analyze cancer cells that circulate through a patient's bloodstream could provide a less invasive way of monitoring cancer and selecting the best treatments. So Mehmet Toner and collaborators at Massachusetts General Hospital have developed a microfluidics chip that effectively captures these rare cells, which make up just one in a billion cells in blood, in high enough numbers to analyze them for molecular markers. The device also isolated clusters of tumor cells for the first time, which may help shed light on cancer's ability to spread, or metastasize, from its initial birthplace.

Even before tumors metastasize, they shed a small number of cancer cells into the bloodstream. The ability to simply take a blood sample from a patient and then capture these cells and analyze them for specific molecular markers could provide ways for physicians to select the best drugs for patients. The approach helps doctors avoid the invasive surgeries they now perform to collect tumor tissue for molecular testing.

The technologies are becoming increasingly important as the number of so-called targeted cancer therapies--drugs designed to attack a specific molecular glitch in a patient's cancer--grows. Physicians need ways to easily assess their patients' cancers for the molecular markers that suggest a particular treatment will work, as well as for signs the treatment is working or that the cells have evolved resistance to that drug.

Un "cervello in fuga" Italiano crea il primo chip per computer quantistici

Alberto Peruzzo, 32 anni, ha presentato la sua ricerca su "Science". Veneziano di nascita, si è laureato a Padova. Ora lavora nel Centro di Fotonica Quantistica dell'università di Bristol. Il suo "chip" potrebbe dimezzare i tempi per arrivare a costruire "computer quantistici"

E' stata condotta da un italiano in Gran Bretagna la ricerca internazionale che ha realizzato il primo chip del futuro, descritto sulla rivista Science. Un risultato che secondo gli esperti potrebbe più che dimezzare (da 25 a 10 anni) i tempi per trasformare in realtà i potenti e velocissimi computer quantistici. Nato a Venezia e laureato a Padova, Alberto Peruzzo ha 32 anni e lavora nel Centro di Fotonica Quantistica dell'università di Bristol.

"E' affascinante l'idea che i futuri computer quantistici permetteranno di simulare quello che avviene in una molecola o in una reazione chimica'', ha detto Peruzzo. ''Queste simulazioni - ha aggiunto - oggi sono difficili anche per supercomputer''. Si annuncia, cioè, un cambiamento dalla portata rivoluzionaria che, ormai in un periodo non più lunghissimo, potrebbe avere ripercussioni importanti su molti campi della ricerca, dalla comprensione di processi come fotosintesi e superconduttività. Tra le ricadute che fin da ora è possibile immaginare: una nuova generazione di celle solari, futuristici materiali high-tech e sintesi di nuovi farmaci.

Computing at the Speed of Light

Intel Laser pcThe world of computing could change rapidly in coming years thanks to technology that replaces the metal wiring between components with faster, more efficient fiber-optic links.

"All communications over long distance are driven by lasers, but you've never had it inside devices," says Mario Paniccia, director of Intel's photonics lab in Santa Clara, CA. "Our new integrated optical link makes that possible."

Paniccia's team has perfected tiny silicon chips capable of encoding and decoding laser signals sent via fiber optics. Today, when data arrives at a computer via a fiber optic connection it has to be moved from a separate photonic device to an electronic circuit. This new system promises to speed things up because everything works in silicon.

Last week, Paniccia's team demonstrated the first complete photonic communications system made from components fully integrated into silicon chips.

HP is developing new materials for brighter low-power displays

Electronic paper that reflects light, instead of filtering it from a backlight, as most conventional displays do, is easy on the eyes and saves on battery life. But this reliance on ambient light becomes a handicap when trying to make a bright, beautiful color display. Researchers at HP are addressing the problem by developing new materials that use ambient light to create a more vibrant color for video-capable, low-power screens.

Conventional displays, including LCDs, use a backlight to produce light, and layers of optics to filter it to create different colors. This type of display needs a lot of power because most of the light is lost during filtering.
