Personal Computer: Lenovo buys German PC firm

LENOVO Group Ltd yesterday said European authorities have approved its plan to acquire a German computer and consumer-electronics maker for 231 million euros (US$334 million) in a deal that could double the Chinese firm's market share in Germany.

China's largest personal computer maker will acquire a 36.66 percent stake from Medion AG for 13 euros a share via cash, it said yesterday. Lenovo, also the world's No. 4 PC maker, will extend the cash offer to remaining shareholders for 13 euros per share, which could cost the company another 235 million euros.

HTC unveils new tablet PC

Taiwan-based smartphone maker HTC Corp unveiled its first tablet computer, HTC Flyer, on the Chinese mainland on Thursday, and analysts said its price is higher than expected, which could make it hard to challenge Apple Inc's dominant position in the market.

The HTC Flyer, priced at 5,500 yuan ($852), will be launched at the end of July on the Chinese mainland. The 7-inch device runs on the Android 2.2 operating system and supports both Wi-Fi and China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd's third generation WCDMA network.

High-Tech: HP signs deal with Shanghai government

HP ChinaSHANGHAI government and Hewlett-Packard Development Co signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday that may increase the technology giant's investment in the city.

HP said it intends to expand its manufacturing base in Shanghai, consolidate existing sites into one multi-purpose campus and establish Shanghai as a China headquarters for HP's Personal Systems Group.

The company promised to collaborate with the Shanghai government to apply technology to tackle complex infrastructure, energy and health care transformations.

TabletPC: Huawei launches MediaPad

Huawei Technologies Co's MediaPad is displayed yesterday at the tablet's global launch in Singapore. Huawei, China's largest phone-network equipment maker, introduced its second line of tablet computers in eight months, as the company expands its push into consumer markets.

The new MediaPad tablet with a 7-inch screen will run Google Inc's Android Honeycomb 3.2 operating system. Huawei's S7 tablet and an updated S7 Slim are already on sale in Europe and Asia.

IPR Chinese government: all computer software used by its central government agencies is authorized and legitimate

The Chinese government will ensure that all computer software used by its 135 central government agencies is authorized and legitimate by the end of May, the National Copyright Administration (NCA) said Thursday.

Central government agencies spent a total of 140.91 million yuan (or $21.73 million) to purchase 176,763 legitimate software packages between late October last year and the end of May this year, the NCA said in a statement.

The NCA said a long-term mechanism has also been established to ensure that only legitimate software will be used by central government agencies.

China will boost the integrated circuit (IC) sector at a "state strategy" level over the next five years through 2015, Yang Xueshan, vice minister of industry and information technology has said.

China's IC sales will likely top 330 billion yuan ($50.54 billion) in 2015 and meet 27.5 percent of domestic demand, Yang told Xinhua Friday.

Intel Vs FutureFOR many years, Moore's Law was regarded the sacred rule of information technology. It predicted that industry advances would require a doubling of chip capacity every 18 months.

The law was named after Gordon Moore, a co-founder of Intel, who first postulated the idea in 1965. Unfortunately for Intel, the company paid too much attention to the law and too little attention to what was really going on in the consumer electronics world. Personal computers, the old industry standard, were becoming eclipsed by mobile Internet devices like tablets and smartphones that required a new kind of chips.

Intel officials attending the annual Intel Developer Forum held in Beijing last week admitted with some embarrassment that Moore's Law no longer holds true.

"It's a pity that we looked forward, but we acted at a slow pace," said Ian Yang, Intel China's president.

LENOVO Group Ltd targets to sell 1 million of its LePad tablet computers in the domestic market by the end of this year through leading electronics retailers.

Lenovo, China's biggest personal computer maker, officially launched LePad on Monday night, which made it the latest computer maker to jump into an increasingly crowded market which includes rivals Apple Inc, Motorola Mobility, Research in Motion, Samsung and Hewlett-Packard Inc.

"It's a new start for Lenovo to penetrate the huge mobile Internet market in China," Chen Xudong, Lenovo China's general manager, said yesterday during a signing ceremony with electronics retailer Hisap.

Lenovo and Hisap said in Shanghai that LePad would be sold in 100 Hisap stores nationwide this year, targeting sales of 100,000 units. In other cities including Beijing, Lenovo also signed deals with Gome and Suning, the country's top two electronics retailers, to sell LePad nationwide.

Lenovo, the world's No. 4 PC maker, showcased LePad in January in the United States.

The LePad comes in four versions, with the 16-gigabyte Wi-Fi model starting at 3,499 yuan (US$533). A 16GB 3G model with cellular connectivity starts at 4,599 yuan.

It has a 10.1-inch screen, camera, runs on Google's Android system, and features pre-installed games like Angry Birds and Plants vs Zombies.

Apple's iPad 2, which debuted in the US three weeks ago, starts at US$499. It will sell in Hong Kong in April.
