Shanghai scientists are claiming a breakthrough in the search for an HIV vaccine, with clinical trials on humans expected to begin in three years' time, given sufficient funding.

Scientists from the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai, Chinese Academy of Sciences, say they are the first in the world to use fruit fly cells to produce HIV-1 virus-like particles which then successfully generated immunity in mice.

Traditional Chinese medicine is science, not witchcraft

Posted by Qiao LAB in traditional Chinese medicine , TCM

Qiao LAB

EXPERTS in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are hoping UNESCO's recent listing of acupuncture and moxibustion, the traditional Chinese therapy of burning the mugwort herb against the skin, as intangible cultural heritage might herald a revival of TCM.

Yuan Xiaohong, a student at the School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, is often frustrated by the distrust of the traditional therapies. "In my hometown, most people know little about acupuncture. They regard it as akin to witchcraft," says the 23-year-old from southeast China's Fujian Province.

For centuries before Western medicine entered the country about 200 years ago, needles were standard tools for Chinese doctors.

"It is definitely good and exciting news for acupuncture doctors that the therapy is on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage," Yuan says. "We can see that the authorities have begun to pay more attention to the development of acupuncture therapy."

Effective therapies

"Although a relative newcomer in China, Western medicine has become the mainstream. Now many Chinese have little understanding of traditional therapies like acupuncture and moxibustion," says Zhao Jiping, doctor at the Dongzhimen Hospital of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, where people can queue for half a day to see an acupuncture specialist.

"More and more people are finding that acupuncture and moxibustion can help maintain and improve health with few side effects, but people don't realize that our ancestors proved them to be effective therapies for diseases, including very serious ones," Zhao says.

World's first capsule robot for diagnosing illnesses invented

Posted by Qiao LAB in diagnosing illnesses , China , Capsule Robot

Qiao LAB

If everything goes well, a type of "capsule robot," which can both move automatically in people's stomachs and diagnose illnesses will be put on the market by the beginning of 2011.

Reporters learned on Nov. 7 from the Chongqing Jinshan Science and Technology (Group) that they have successfully developed the world's first moveable "capsule robot."

It is quite different from the traditional capsule endoscopy, which can only move passively along with the stomach's peristalsis. Meanwhile, the Jinshan PH capsule, which is used for diagnosing gastroesophageal reflux disease was also successfully developed by the group, making them one of the only two companies in the world that have successfully developed the PH capsule.

Robotic Limbs that Plug into the Brain

Lifelike LimbsScientists are testing whether brain signals can control sophisticated prosthetic arms.

Most of the robotic arms now in use by some amputees are of limited practicality; they have only two to three degrees of freedom, allowing the user to make a single movement at a time. And they are controlled with conscious effort, meaning the user can do little else while moving the limb.

A new generation of much more sophisticated and lifelike prosthetic arms, sponsored by the Department of Defense's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), may be available within the next five to 10 years. Two different prototypes that move with the dexterity of a natural limb and can theoretically be controlled just as intuitively--with electrical signals recorded directly from the brain--are now beginning human tests.
