CHINESE iPhone and iPad users do not seem willing to pay for applications although they may have paid several thousand yuan for the high-end mobile devices.

The downloading of applications in Apple Inc's stores has tripled in the past year and propelled the Chinese mainland to become the second-biggest App Store market but the revenue generated by the apps is limited, a report by a mobile application researcher said yesterday.

China’s Internet industry suffers many disadvantages compared to the US. It is burdened by heavy regulation, underpowered data centers, and censorship, just to name a few. But one of its great advantages comes from a counterintuitive source: The country’s underdeveloped tech-commerce infrastructure. The implications are significant, and they are shaping China’s Internet landscape in a way that may ultimately be followed by the US.

In the US, Internet businesses have developed in an environment in which they must compete with already-mature industries that have long had good access to technology. That’s true of ecommerce businesses, for example, which have had to build on, against, or over established bricks-and-mortar networks of retail stores. It’s also true of the online travel industry, which has had to adapt to pre-existing technology systems tied to airlines, agency groups, and, more recently, early-Internet booking verticals such as Expedia and Orbitz.

IPR: Apple faces new legal challenge in China in Voice Recognition

A CHINESE technology firm has filed a legal challenge accusing US giant Apple of infringing its patented voice recognition software with its Siri function on the iPhone, the company said yesterday.

The move comes days after Apple paid US$60 million to end a dispute over who could use the iPad name in China.

Group buying website Groupon opened its first retail concept store in Singapore on Wednesday, saying that the move is not aimed at the business to go offline but to enhance consumer experience.

"Although many Singaporeans today like to easily go online to purchase deals, many still prefer the face-to-face interaction and the fact that an online shop like Groupon has a physical presence, " said Adrian Tan, chief operating officer of Groupon Singapore.

IPR China: Apple pays US$60m to settle iPad dispute

APPLE Inc has agreed to pay US$60 million to Shenzhen-based Proview to end a dispute over the iPad trademark on the Chinese mainland that started two years ago.

Both sides reached the settlement agreement on June 25 and Apple had transferred the funds to the account of the Higher People's Court of Guangdong Province, the court said on its website today.

Mobile: Shanghai users to get 4G phones next year

THE first 4G mobile phone based on homegrown technology is expected to debut in Shanghai in the first half of next year, when commercial use of 4G services will have begun, China Mobile said yesterday.

China Mobile, the world's biggest mobile operator with around 700 million subscribers, has established a TD-LTE (time division-long term evolution) network covering areas within the Inner Ring Road in Shanghai, to provide much faster network speeds. "We will provide TD-LTE handsets and related services next year," Mao Weiliang, Shanghai Mobile's vice general manager of data services division, said during the annual Shanghai Telecommunications Conference.

However, it happened between Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi Corp, and Zhou Hongyi, chairman of the Chinese online security software developer Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Both of them lost their tempers and criticized each other on micro blogs.

On May 15, when Xiaomi released its youth version smartphone at 1,499 yuan ($235), Qihoo 360 announced a partnership with Huawei Technologies Co Ltd to introduce a similar smartphone model at the same price.

4G: China Mobile Links Hangzhou's TD-LTE With Hong Kong Network
