Ebook: China's Dangdang.com To Start Pre-sales Of own E-reader From July 26

Facing competition in China from Apple, Amazon, and domestic gadget companies, Chinese B2C e-commerce website Dangdang.com announced that it will start pre-sales of its own-branded e-reader product from July 26, 2012.

With a 6-inch display, Dangdang.com's new product will only be available on its official website and the company currently has no plans to launch it via third-party channels. Dangdang.com will reveal details about the new product, including product specifications, functions, and brand name, on July 24.

Caixin Media recently completed a new round of financing and introduced Tencent as one of its shareholders, with its major shareholder, Zhejiang Daily Press Group, maintaining a 40 percent stake, the financial news publisher said yesterday.

IPR: In China foreign software equally treated in government procurement

A senior Chinese copyright official said on Tuesday that foreign providers received equal treatment during a massive government procurement of licensed software.

From late 2010, the Chinese central and provincial governments had spend more than 1 billion yuan (156.9 million U.S. dollars) on 158,823 operating system licenses, 506,693 copies of office software, plus anti-virus and other special-purpose software in a national anti-piracy campaign which ran till the end of June.

SHANGHAI will upgrade its Wi-Fi network with more hot spots and higher security levels as it seeks to establish itself as a "wireless city" under the city's 12th Five-Year (2011-2015) Plan.

By 2013, Shanghai will have more than 22,000 Wi-Fi hot spots, covering all major public areas, according to the Shanghai Radio Administration Bureau.

While industry watchers gnash teeth about Google and Facebook’s ability to adapt for the mobile era, in China similar concerns surround Baidu, a 12-year-old company that has built a $37.6 billion business largely on the back of PC-based search. After visiting Baidu’s Beijing headquarters today, however, I’m convinced that the juggernaut has what its American counterparts lack: a coherent and sustainable long-term strategy for mobile.

That was somewhat surprising to me. I had been told by informed people that the company’s mobile products teams were struggling, and I had read that founder and CEO Robin Li had initially misread the big shift to mobile. Analysts, too, have so far been underwhelmed by Baidu’s ability to react to the mobile transition.

Medicine: Shanghai scientists may have found AIDS vaccine

Shanghai scientists are claiming a breakthrough in the search for an HIV vaccine, with clinical trials on humans expected to begin in three years' time, given sufficient funding.

Scientists from the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai, Chinese Academy of Sciences, say they are the first in the world to use fruit fly cells to produce HIV-1 virus-like particles which then successfully generated immunity in mice.

China’s Internet industry suffers many disadvantages compared to the US. It is burdened by heavy regulation, underpowered data centers, and censorship, just to name a few. But one of its great advantages comes from a counterintuitive source: The country’s underdeveloped tech-commerce infrastructure. The implications are significant, and they are shaping China’s Internet landscape in a way that may ultimately be followed by the US.

In the US, Internet businesses have developed in an environment in which they must compete with already-mature industries that have long had good access to technology. That’s true of ecommerce businesses, for example, which have had to build on, against, or over established bricks-and-mortar networks of retail stores. It’s also true of the online travel industry, which has had to adapt to pre-existing technology systems tied to airlines, agency groups, and, more recently, early-Internet booking verticals such as Expedia and Orbitz.
