Innovation: Fresh talent program to boost sci-tech

The Chinese government has launched a ten-year campaign to cultivate more than 10,000 talented individuals in scientific and technological fields in its latest effort to consolidate a foundation for the country's development.

The project, titled "National Plan for the Special Support of High-level Talent," aims to support 100 scientists who have made breakthroughs in leading fields and have the potential to become "world-class scientists," according to a statement released Wednesday after a meeting of the Central Coordination Group for Talent Work.

Murata Manufacturing Co's latest capacitor (right), measuring just 0.25 millimeter by 0.125 millimeter, is pointed by a mechanical pencil as it is displayed with its bigger size models. The Japanese electronics maker has developed the world's tiniest component known as the capacitor.

Capacitors, which store electric energy, are used in the dozens, even in the hundreds, in just about every type of gadget - smartphones, laptops, hybrid cars, medical equipment and digital cameras.

China Cloud: Nothing cloudy in Baidu plan

BAIDU, China's largest search engine provider, will invest about 10 billion yuan (US$1.6 billion) to build cloud computing centers to attract web-based software developers as it seeks to offer more services to users.

Baidu will also allow application developers to access freely its cloud computing capabilities, the firm said yesterday. It hopes this move may help attract more smartphone users by providing them with a wider range of web-based services.

E-Commerce: Suning to acquire Redbaby

According to a Netease Tech report, Gong Wenxiang, an e-commerce industry veteran, revealed on August 28 that employees from Chinese consumer electronics and home appliances retailer Suning's (002024.SZ) B2C site Suning.com have been in talks to acquire B2C e-commerce site Redbaby for the past month.

According to Gong, talks between the two companies have progressed to the assessment and due-diligence stage, with a final amount being the sole remaining stage prior to an acquisition.

Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer Hisense (600060.SH) has announced it will unveil its USD 99 Hisense Plus Google TV set-top box (STB) during the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin (August 31 - September 5).

Google executives have said the new Hisense Google TV offering has been designed to intuitively search and sort through millions of channels and shows across live television, content services, home networks, apps, and the web.

Digital: China to invest in TV digitalization in Africa

The China Africa Development Fund and China Development Bank have promised to invest heavily into the digitalization of TV in African countries.

Since 2007, $100 million has been provided to the project by the China Africa Development Fund and another $50 million is coming, according to Chi Jianxin, president of the fund, speaking at the African Digital TV Development Ministerial Seminar on Sunday.

TRAVELERS logging onto free Wi-Fi services at the city's two airports now need to use their real identification to register, Shanghai Airport Authority announced yesterday.

Cell phone users registered with a local mobile operator can go through the verification by logging in with the password automatically sent to the phone via text message, while roaming or foreign passengers can acquire a password by scanning identification documents such as passports and ID cards, according to the airport operator.

CHINA'S drive to produce millions of new patents in the next few years as part of a switch from a "made in China" to "designed in China" economic model will curtail innovation standards, a European study warned yesterday.

China is seeking to transform itself from being the world's factory floor into a global pioneer by setting ambitious state-mandated patent targets - a goal that has already resulted in it surpassing the United States last year in patent filings.
